Humphrey Bogart's breakthrough role came in 1934 when producer-director Arthur Hopkins remembered him for a part in Robert Sherwood's "The Petrified Forest." Hopkins wanted Humphrey Bogart to portray Duke Mantee, an escaped killer, which was much different than the pretty-boy roles he was used to playing. Unknowingly, Hopkins had opened the door for a talent that has yet to be surpassed or duplicated.
